Four champions crowned at Mohegan Sun




Class S – St Paul preserves to beat Portland

Junior Courtney Lobo hit a shot with 15.5 seconds to seal the title as St. Paul beat Portland 39-37 in the Class S championship game Saturday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Lobo, who had six points and three rebounds, had just missed the front end of a one and one 35 seconds earlier. She came up with a rebound off Portland's last shot, a wild toss by Lindsey Dionne with six seconds left.

Junior Amber Litwinko led third-seeded St. Paul (24-3) with 14 points and nine rebounds. Kelly Coleman had 26 points and 12 rebounds for Portland who finished the season 22-6.


Class M – Kolbe Wins another State Title

Kolbe Cathedral defeated Brookfield 64-50 in the championship Friday evening at Mohegan.  Tiarrah Thompson had 21 points and 15 rebounds, including 10 offensive rebounds, and Jasmine Fogle added 13 points for Kolbe. Cherelle Moore had 11 points and six rebounds.

The Cougars captured their sixth state title this decade. Jaime Bickelhaupt had 16 points for the Bobcats (22-5), who were in their first championship game.


Class L – Hillhouse defeats to Wethersfield 47-45

Hillhouse won its second consecutive Class L title, despite a tough battle from Wethersfield, 47-45, Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Bria Holmes had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Academics. Abigail Corning had 25 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles. Adreana Thomas came up with huge defensive effort for Hillhouse as well.


Class LL – NFA repeats

Despite a late charge from Mercy, Norwich Free Academy was able to h0ld on for a 50-47 victory Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena, giving the Wildcats their second straight state Class LL girls basketball championship.

Kastine Evans scored 22 points for NFA, which won its seventh title under coach Bill Scarlata.
